GPS stops tracking when phone screen turns off (Android)

Prevent Android Battery Optimization from terminating SuperCycle GPS logging in the background.

If your GPS recording stops or draws straight lines when your screen turns off, Android's aggressive battery saving ("Doze Mode") is sleeping the app.

  1. In-App Shortcut: Open SuperCycle and go to Settings → Advanced → Phone → Battery optimization settings. Ensure it displays a green checkmark.
  2. Open your Android device Settings → Apps → SuperCycle.
  3. Tap Permissions → Location → Select 'While in Use' (or 'Allow all the time' if available; required so GPS tracks while your phone screen is dark).
  4. Go back and tap Battery → Select Unrestricted (or disable "Battery Optimization").
  5. On Samsung devices: Check Device Care → Battery → Background usage limits and ensure SuperCycle is in "Never sleeping apps".
Warning: Turning on your phone's system-wide "Power Saving Mode" throttles GPS polling rates and can cause location inaccuracies. Keep Power Saving Mode off during active outdoor rides.
Comprehensive Prevention Guide: Battery optimization is only one reason the OS stops tracking. Low Memory Killers, manufacturer task killers (Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus), and multitasking tray settings can also terminate apps.
